US Nursing Seminars ‘Make a Difference’

To provide the Filipino nursing community with the latest in US nursing practices and to better equip them with the protocols, skills, and knowledge for the complexities of the US patient care environment, HCCA International recently offered a series of seminars in Makati City, Quezon City, and Cebu City entitled “Nurses: Making A Difference.”

One of the seminars, hosted by the Philippine Heart Center, was attended by over 200 nurses, managers, and educators from area government hospitals including National Kidney and Transplant Institute, AFP Medical Center, East Avenue Medical Center, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, and Philippine Children’s Medical Center.

The speaker, Winnie Fritz, MSN, Ed.D, is Chief Nursing Officer for HCCA International and founder of the HCCA Institute of Nursing Excellence, an educational program designed to prepare nurses for employment in HCCA’s client hospitals in the United States.  As a consultant to international hospitals on Joint Commission accreditation, Dr. Fritz also serves on the international committee of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, providing expertise on nursing leadership at a global level.

At the seminar, Dr. Fritz stressed the need for nurses wanting to work in the US to have a good grounding on the requisites of current nursing practice in American hospitals. “The key thing about nursing in the United States is that it is highly independent, so unlike other hospitals around the world,” she said.

An assistant professor at Georgetown University, University of Maryland, University of Missouri, and the University of Nevada, Dr. Fritz shared with the nurse participants her knowledge of comprehensive assessments, patient safety goals according to WHO and The Joint Commission, creating a culture of service to exceed patients’ expectations, coordinating interdisciplinary patient care, and creating magnet work environments. Dr. Fritz has previously conducted seminars and workshops in the Philippines for ANSAP, PNA, 3rd World Congress for Critical Care, UST College of Nursing, Manila Doctors College and Hospital, and St. Luke’s Medical Center.
